Working with Natural Capital in the agri-food supply chain
Agriculture and the agri-supply chain rely on effective management of natural capital to ensure food security and environmental management. With the evolution in Government funding for UK agriculture becoming ever more prominent, ways in which farmers can access support funds is changing at pace. The UK Government offers a range of funding for agriculture and the creation of public goods by managing the soil, water, woodlands and the environment. However, a balance needs to be struck between the environmental protection of land and the production of food to feed the nation from productive agriculture.
The stresses on UK agriculture are many - from the impact of climate change, the UK's exit from the EU, the post-COVID environment, avian influenza, competing land use pressures, the Ukraine war, as well as high inflation and the cost of living crisis. This year’s AIC Conference will consider how these conflicting pressures impact the agri-food supply chains and will assess the opportunities to navigate through this volatility. There is also an increasing drive to invest, innovate and the adopt agri-technology, and these factors will be taken into account to determine how some of these new innovations can shape agriculture and the agri-food supply chain.
Chairing the Conference this year will be BBC Farming Today's Charlotte Smith, a seasoned veteran in navigating the agri-food landscape. The political scene will be represented by the Secretary of State for Agriculture as well as political leaders from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This will be especially important this year in the run up to a widely anticipated General Election in 2024. Other thought leaders within the industry, academia and the trade will put forward their views of these crucial areas to help AIC Members, stakeholders and the wider audience become fully informed of the current issues and opportunities.
We look forward to welcoming you to the AIC Conference 2023, where you can join in the discussion at this flagship event for the agri-food supply chain.
