Cobalt salts – emergency legislation – GB wide approval
The following emergency legislation for the authorisation for four cobalt additives salts to be used in livestock feed, throughout GB, has been brought into operation.

FSA and FSS have issued separate letters confirming the provisional authorisation of the four cobalt salts concerned:
- Cobalt(II) acetate tetrahydrate (ID 3b301)
- Cobalt(II) carbonate (ID 3b302)
- Cobalt(II) carbonate hydroxide (2:3) monohydrate (ID 3b303)
- Cobalt(II) sulphate heptahydrate (ID 3b305)
The authorisations commence on 15th July 2023 and the GB Register of Feed Additives will be updated in due course.
Please note that the provisional authorisations in England and Wales are for a period of 5 years, ending on 14th July 2028 whereas the provisional authorisations in Scotland are for a period of 3 years, ending on 14th July 2026.
Under current operating arrangements, Northern Ireland will continue to follow EU rules for placing on the market and use of feed additives.
