Key outcomes of feed advice

  1. Increased efficiency and profitability

  2. Improved welfare

  3. Enhanced gut resilience

Background and area of expertise

Hannah graduated from the University of Nottingham with a Nutritional Biochemistry BSc (Hons) and an Animal Nutrition MSc.

After graduating, she joined Lallemand Animal Nutrition and has worked as part of the on-site biotechnology team as well as in a technical advisory role.

Currently, she is Monogastric Technical Manager for UK and Ireland, advising B2B and B2C customers within the pig, poultry, pet and equine sectors.

Give an example of how your feed advice has made a measurable difference

The world of feed additives and feed materials has become a crowded field, but specific interventions used correctly can contribute towards a functional and efficient diet. For example, using enzymes to extract more nutrients from the diet.

One area where Hannah has been able to give recommendations that have made a marked improvement in broiler production is around the use of an in-water probiotic at specific stress points during a broiler’s life, such as around vaccination, to aid gut health and reinforce bird natural defences.

A recent two-year study showed that one simple intervention given eight times throughout the flock can result in reduced seven-day mortality rates and a 30g increase in weight per bird at day 32.

Broilers face many challenges, such as gut microbiota formation, vaccines, feed changes and thinning.

Supporting birds during stress events by making small changes to the diet can make a large difference to bird’s welfare, feed efficiency and performance.

What difference does FAR make to you and your customers?

FAR represents a recognised standard of advice which farmers can trust. It ensures FAR members are trained in key areas of importance and progression for the industry.

The development of new modules each year, such as sustainability and farm nutrient balance means FAR members can provide the most up-to-date advice to farmers.

I have been a member of FAR since I joined the industry and at Lallemand Animal Nutrition we see FAR as a way to help ensure we provide competent and professional advice, with a focus on reducing environmental impact.
