The value the former foods bring to the animal feed sector has been highlighted in a special publication released to mark 10 years of the UK Former Foodstuffs Processors Association (UKFFPA).

In the UK over 650,000 tonnes of former foodstuffs are processed and handled or sent directly to farms each year for use as livestock feed worth £110 million.

An affiliate of the Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC) - the agri-supply trade association - the UKFFPA represents businesses in the former foodstuffs sector which add value to the food supply chain by converting former foods into animal feed, providing nutritious feed ingredients while reducing food waste and carbon emissions.

Former foodstuffs are food items that are no longer suitable for human consumption for various reasons, such as being offcuts, trimmings, misshapen, or manufactured out of specification. Surplus bread products from retailers and bakeries also fall under this category. These food items can be used as animal feed as long as it is safe and legal to do so.

Special publication

The commemorative 10-year anniversary publication includes a look back at how and why the UKFFPA was formed, its vital role in helping feed livestock while minimising environmental impacts, and the industry support it has attracted since 2013.

John Knight, the UKFFPA Chair, said: "This is a significant milestone in UKFFPA's mission to unite companies to advance and promote the former foodstuffs processing sector while addressing food losses in the supply chain.

"Through the commendable sustainability initiatives of our Members, the elimination of landfill use in this sector has been achieved, playing a pivotal role in supporting the Government's commitment to reducing food wastage."
