Government Launches Farming Profitability Review
The UK Government has launched a comprehensive Farming Profitability Review to ‘enhance the financial resilience and long-term sustainability of British agriculture’. Announced at the NFU conference in February, it will be led by Baroness Minette Batters,
Vision and Objectives
The review will explore policy options to support farm profitability by removing barriers, expanding market access, and encouraging innovation across the sector.
Key Areas of Focus
- Innovation and Productivity – Supporting the adoption of new technologies and practices to improve on-farm efficiency.
- Market Access – Creating more opportunities for farmers to enter and grow in both domestic and international markets.
- Risk Management – Developing practical tools to help farmers better manage financial risks and business uncertainty.
Leadership and Engagement
Baroness Batters will lead the review in close collaboration with farmers, industry leaders, and relevant government departments. Her recommendations will offer both immediate and long-term strategies to build a profitable, competitive agricultural sector. AIC will contact Baroness Batters and the team in Defra leading on this, to ensure that member views are taken onboard.
Next Steps
Baroness Batters will report back to the Secretary of State within six months.
