Reports emerged earlier this week that the Government was potentially pausing the implementation of the needed Secondary Legislation because of ongoing discussions with the EU to establish an SPS/veterinary agreement. This concern was allayed when the Defra Secretary, Steve Reed, confirmed that the Secondary Legislation would go through in March, during his speech at the Oxford Farming Conference. This week, 65 leading trade bodies (including AIC), politicians, scientists and investors sent a letter to the Defra Minister responsible, Daniel Zeichner MP, calling on the Government to set out a clear timetable to implement the legislation. AIC’s Ed Barker also was quoted in Thursday’s Financial Times, welcoming the clarification, and providing insight on the interactions with an EU SPS/veterinary agreement.
