As part of the rollout of its waste reforms, the Government has set out its approach to the delivery of Simpler Recycling in England, which includes guidance on workplace recycling.
Simpler Recycling aims to make recycling easier in England through consistent collections for all households, businesses and relevant non-domestic premises.
Businesses should be aware that:
- By 31 March 2025, businesses and relevant non-domestic premises (such as schools and hospitals) in England will be required to make arrangements for the collection of the core recyclable waste streams - glass, metal, plastic, paper and card and food waste.
- Micro-firms (businesses with fewer than ten full-time equivalent employees) will be temporarily exempt from this requirement and will have until 31 March 2027 to arrange for the recycling of these core recyclable waste streams.
- Residual (non-recyclable) waste
- Food (mixed with garden waste for households if appropriate)
- Paper and card
- All other dry recyclable materials (plastic, metal and glass)
Communications toolkit
To support waste collectors, local authorities and workplaces to raise awareness of the changes required, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has developed a toolkit of resources, which will be added to with further support resources in the coming months.
Businesses are encouraged to speak with their waste collector to establish any changes that the introduction of Simpler Recycling will have to their current waste collection arrangement.
