Updated DEFRA Salmonella Code published for Great Britain

Last week, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) released an updated Code of Practice for Salmonella in Animal Feed in Great Britain. This revision followed a thorough review process that included input from the Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC), Defra, the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), the Food Standards Agency (FSA), and Food Standards Scotland (FSS).

In response to industry feedback, the code includes more detailed information on actions following a Salmonella isolation, and some of the wording has been simplified. Defra and APHA are inviting comments on the revised code via email at [email protected].

In line with current government practice, the code is now available online, and there will not be a separate PDF or printed document. You can view the guidance at gov.uk.

Additionally, AIC has noted that the Irish Department for Agriculture and the Marine (DAFM) is also in the process of developing a similar Salmonella Code for their industry, which is expected to be published later this year.
