An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory biosecurity has been introduced across Wales due to the country's increased bird flu risk.

The move comes just days after an AIPZ was announced in response to the increase in cases across England and new findings in wild birds, with an extended zone brought into force throughout England and Scotland at 25 January 2025.

This means all bird keepers must implement the stringent biosecurity measures required to protect poultry and captive birds from the disease. All bird keepers must complete the mandatory biosecurity self-assessment checklist.

There is also a mandatory housing requirement for all birds in parts of England including North Yorkshire, York, the East Riding of Yorkshire, the City of Kingston upon Hull, Shropshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk.

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) says bird keepers should remain vigilant and follow these stringent biosecurity measures to prevent future outbreaks.
